Lake Saif-ul-Malook with snow on the surrounding peaks

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa · 3 days / 2 nights

Naran and Kaghan

PKR 16,500 per person, sharing room

Three days to Naran and Kaghan, with pickup in Lahore or Islamabad. PKR 16,500 per person in a sharing room, or PKR 43,000 for a couple in a separate room. The middle day is the lake. The other two are the road.

Naran in three days is a sprint, and we describe it that way. Two of the days are mostly road. The middle day is the lake. People who want a softer pace should add a night. Pickup is Lahore or Islamabad. The published rates are the group seat: PKR 16,500 a person sharing, or PKR 43,000 for a couple in a separate room.

The road

You leave before dawn. Balakot to Kaghan is slow in July and August, and the track to the lake has its own queue at sunrise. The group rate covers the seat and the hotel. The jeep up to Saif-ul-Malook is added only when the written plan names it.

Day by day

  1. Day 1 — Pickup to Naran

A long day up the Kunhar from Lahore or Islamabad. Breakfast is a roadside stop, not a hotel buffet. If the valley is moving slowly we sleep in Kaghan and finish the last stretch in the morning rather than driving a tired group into Naran after dark.

  2. Day 2 — The lake

The day is for Saif-ul-Malook. The jeep up the track is arranged when the written plan includes it. Time at the water, then back to the valley. If everyone still has legs and the road is clear, the afternoon goes toward Lulusar. If not, the afternoon is rest. Both are a successful day.

  3. Day 3 — The pass, or the road home

Babusar Top is a gift of the season, not a promise of the brochure. When it is open and the group wants it, we go up and turn around with enough daylight to reach the pickup city at night. When it is shut, we start home earlier and do not invent a substitute spectacle.

Before you decide

  • June to August is busy. September is kinder if your dates can move.
  • The lake is cold even in July. A layer in the jeep bag matters more than another shirt.
  • Best season: Late May to September, when Saif-ul-Malook and Babusar are usually open
  • Naran is about 2,400 metres. The jeep to Saif-ul-Malook climbs toward 3,200 metres.

Along the way

  • Saif-ul-Malook at first light
  • Lulusar if the day still has hours
  • Babusar viewpoint only when the road is open
