Hunza and Skardu

PKR 39,500 per person, sharing room

Eight days to Hunza and Skardu, with pickup in Lahore or Islamabad. PKR 39,500 per person in a sharing room, or PKR 98,500 for a couple in a separate room. One full day in each valley. Deosai only when the season and the written plan allow it.

Eight days is the published Hunza and Skardu departure. Two of those days are the road out, two are the road between and the road home, and the valleys get the days in the middle. The per-person rate is a sharing room. A couple who want their own room take the couple rate. This is a group seat, not a private vehicle priced for four.

The road

Hunza to Skardu via Gilgit is a full driving day along the Indus. We keep it whole. Splitting the sights of both valleys onto that day is how a week becomes a catalogue of windows. The nights on either end of the trip are on the Karakoram Highway, as they are on the shorter Hunza route.

Day by day

  1. Day 1 — Lahore onto the highway

The same honest first day as the Hunza trip: a long road to a practical night in Besham or Chilas.

  2. Day 2 — Karimabad

Into Hunza with light left. Walk, eat, sleep. The forts wait for a day that is not already eight hours long.

  3. Day 3 — Hunza properly

Forts, the view above Karimabad, Attabad. Passu if the group would like the cones more than a second museum room. A boat only if the written plan includes it.

  4. Day 4 — Hunza to Skardu

Via Gilgit and along the Indus. A driving day with the right stops: the junction, the river, a meal. Skardu by evening.

  5. Day 5 — Skardu

Shigar and the fort, or Upper Kachura, depending on what the group asked for in the brief. Deosai replaces this day when the road is open and everyone is comfortable at that height. We do not do Deosai as a rushed add-on after a fort tour.

  6. Day 6 — A second morning in Skardu

The extra day is what makes eight days different from a compressed week. Upper Kachura, the fort, or simply a morning that is not a drive. Deosai still replaces a valley day only when the road is open and the group is fit for the height. It is not folded into this morning as an afterthought.

  7. Day 7 — South

Back toward a highway night. The cold desert is a stop if it sits on the way and the light is good, not a reason to leave Skardu at noon and call it a sightseeing day.

  8. Day 8 — Lahore or Islamabad

Home by night, to the city where the group was picked up. If you want Deosai and a slow Hunza as well as both towns, ask for more days. We will price that instead of compressing this one.

Before you decide

  • At Deosai the air is thin. Tell us about heart or breathing conditions before we put it on the plan.
  • Eight days still spends a lot of time on the highway. Say so to anyone who thinks both valleys means a week of walking.
  • Best season: May to September. Deosai is a summer road, roughly June to September.
  • Hunza and Skardu towns sit near 2,200–2,500 metres. Deosai, when it is open, is around 4,000 metres.
